Unit 1: What is Fair?
In our first unit, the students will be learning about biographies, through the theme of fairness. We will be reading short biographies, exploring how they are written and use different strategies to understand the context.
The students will also be learning how to plan and write their own biographies. The final biography will be worked on throughout the term and will be handed in for assessment at the end of the term.
Students began working on their biographies the first week back when they each interviewed a student partner with whom they will practice writing biographies.
In addition to DEAR each morning (Drop Everything And Read), we have been spending additional time reading daily in LA. The children are also encouraged to read daily at home for at least 15 min. In class, we have talked about working up our stamina to spending a greater amount of time reading daily.
Unit 2: Wonders of Space
In this unit the students will be reading and viewing fictional and non-fictional texts related to the topic of space. They will be focusing their writing assignments on writing informational texts, while using diagrams, visuals and pictures for better understanding. We will be reading and analyzing different informational text, before the students choose their own space related topic to write about.
Unit 3: Stories of Our Lives
In this unit we will be focusing on realistic fiction. The students will be reviewing and using reading strategies to understand narrative text. They will read fictional stories that are realistic and make inferences about characters in the stories. They will also compare and make connections to other stories in different forms and media. The end assignment will be a written work of their own, using a point of view from a character in a realistic fiction created by themselves.
